Network Marketing, Leadership, and Geese

Next
Fall when
you see a geese
heading south for the
winter, flying along in a…
V formation, you might consider
what science has discovered as to why
it is that they fly that way. As each bird flaps
its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately
following. By flying in the V formation the entire flock adds
at least 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew on it’s own.
People
who share a
“Common” direction
and sense of community can get
where they are going more quickly and
easily when traveling on the thrust of one another.
When
a goose falls
out of formation,
it suddenly feels the drag
and resistance of trying to ”going it alone”
and quickly gets back into formation to take
adavntage of the lifting power of the birds that are in
front. If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in
formation with those who are headed in the same way that we are.
When
the head goose
get tired, it rotates back
in the formation and another goose
flies point. It is sensible to to take turns
doing demanding jobs whether you are a goose
flying south, or you are working with other people.
Geese
honk from
behind to encourage
those up front to keep up
their speed. What do we say
when we are honking from behind?
Finally,
and this is important,
when a goose gets sick, or is
wounded by gunshots and falls out
of formation, two other geese fall out with
the goose and follow it down to lend help and protection.
They stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly, or until it dies.
Only
then do
they launch
out on their own, or
with another formation
to catch up with their group.
If WE had the “Sense” of a Goose…
WE WOULD STAND TOGETHER LIKE THAT!

THE LESSON
There are 5 “lessons” the we can learn from the geese…
1) People that “share” a common goal, direction, and sense of purpose can always get there more quickly.
2) It is always harder to “go it alone” and it always a lot easier if we stay in formation with those that are headed where we want to go…
IF we are willing to accept their help and give our help to others.
3) Shared leadership and interdependence give us each a chance to “Lead” as well as an opportunity to “Rest”.
As with geese, people are interdependent on each other’s skills, capabilities and unique arrangements of gifts, talents and/or resources.
4) We need to make sure our honking is encouraging, and not discouraging. Where there is encouragement, the production is greater.
The power of encouragement (to stand by one’s heart or core values and encourage the heart and core of others) is the quality of honking we seek.
5)Stand by your familiy, friends, associates, and teamates in both good times and difficult times.
“Bloggers Note”…
Over the years a few “versions” of the above have circulated being attributed to different sources.
I have adapted “Lessons from Geese” from work that was originally authored by Dr Robert McNeish.
Dr McNeish was a biology teacher who enjoyed going over to the Eastern Shore of Maryland with students and observing the geese. He wrote “LESSONS FROM THE GEESE” for a lay sermon he delivered in Northminster Presbyterian Church in Reisterstown, MD in 1972.
Dr McNeish has never made any money from this clever insightful and scientific article which is featured on numerous websites and used by Toastmasters International, Boy Scouts of America and more.
But I would like to see him get the credit…
If you would like to pass it on, use it, please do..
If you have it on your website and have not attributed it to his authorship, I hope you will consider doing so after reading this…
Feel free to “Thank” the teacher..
